BIO

Rui Poças is a cinematographer based in Lisbon, Portugal, and working worldwide with special incidence on feature films.

He is a member of both the Portuguese and Brazilian Societies of Cinematography (AIP and ABC) and member of the Portuguese Film Academy.

Poças achieved international recognition for his diverse contribution to films highlighted by their visual quality and storytelling fluidity.

His work include groundbreaking films such as O FANTASMA and THE ORNITHOLOGIST by Joao Pedro Rodrigues,TABU (Berlinale Alfred Bauer Prize 2012) and GRAND TOUR (Cannes Official Competition 2024 - Best Direction) by Miguel Gomes, ZAMA (Platino and Fenix Awards for Best Cinematography) by Lucrecia Martel, THE GOOD MANNERS by Marco Dutra and Juliana Rojas, FRANKIE by Ira Sachs, ALMA VIVA by Cristele Alves Meira.

SLEEPLESS CITY (trailer above) by Guillermo Galoe, his most recent film screening internationally, premiered in competition at Semaine de la Critique at Cannes this year and won the SACD Award. The film was nominated for a Goya for Best Cinematography by the Spanish Film Academy.

THE SOUFFLEUR by Gaston Solnicki and BURY YOUR DEAD (trailers below) by Marco Dutra are also premiering commercially right now around the world. This last film won the Best Cinematography Award at AIP - Portuguese Society of Cinematography recently.

 

Poças shot THE RYE HORN by Jaione Camborda (Winner at San Sebastian FF), ZAMA by Lucrecia Martel (Venice 2017) and Ira Sachs FRANKIE (Cannes 2019), staring Isabelle Huppert, Greg Kinnear, Marisa Tomei and Jérémie Renier.

 

Poças is a regular collaborator of the Portuguese filmmakers Cristèle Alves Meira (ALMA VIVA) and João Pedro Rodrigues (WILL O’THE WISP, PHANTOM, TO DIE LIKE A MAN, and THE ORNITHOLOGIST) the latter being nominated for Best Film and winning Best Director in Locarno Film Festival. 

Other directors with whom he collaborated include John Malkovich, Margarida Gil, Fernando Matos Silva, Fernando Lopes, Margarita Ledo Leon, Pedro Sena Nunes, João Lopes, Ezequiel Yanco, Jazmin Lopez, Jorge Silva Melo, Juliana Rojas, Gregorio Graziosi, Aly Muritiba, Guilherme Weber, Felipe Hirsh, Catarina Ruivo, Teresa Villaverde, João Mário Grilo.

 

 

Future projects include: AGAINST THE FLOW by Zhang Tao, BODYHACKERS by Carlos Conceição, THE GUESTS by Cristina Diaz and Stefan Butzmuehlen, WILDE'S ROOM by Ma Xue, THE DRAGON BETWEEN HEAVEN AND EARTH by Gonçalo Waddington, CHICO by Latifa Said, 13 ALFINETES by João Pedro Rodrigues and João Rui Guerra da Mata, the first Portuguese movie shot for IMAX, THE ODD ENCHANTMENT OF MADAME P by Sara Driver, AFONSO’S SMILE by João Pedro Rodrigues and SAVAGERY by Miguel Gomes, the last two currently in pre-production.

 

He is a native Portuguese speaker, speaks fluent English, French and Spanish.
